Working with Flower Essences by Linda L. Gunter
Like many of you on a spiritual path, I am studying how to stay healthy and achieve a higher energy level so that I can help other people. Recently, I began to study kinesiology and flower essences to heal my electrical system and the connection between my body and soul to focus more positive energy flowing through me.
About two years ago I consulted a medical intuitive in Sedona, AZ and she introduced me to the books of Machaelle Small Wright. Following in the tradition of the Finehorn Garden in the UK, Machaelle has created Perelandra near Warrenton, VA. Machaelle has written several books including “MAP: Co-Creative White Brotherhood Medical Assistance Program” and “Behaving as if the God in all Life Matters”. In addition she has published several gardening books where she describes her work with nature. More recently she has published a 'soil less garden companion' book which describes co-creating with nature any type of project. For more information you can go to their website www.perelandra-ltd.net.
What is a flower essence?
Flower essences have been used since the 1930s when Dr. Edward Bach developed his Bach flowers treatment for the underlying emotional patterns of his patients, when he was not able to cure their diseases. Flower essences are thought to work on the electrical (central nervous system) of the body. It is the nervous system that to quote the Perelandra Overlighting Deva of Flower Essences “is the bridge which directly connects and fuses the soul to its form”. Since humans relate most directly to nature, we can turn to plants to help rebalance and energize our nervous system when it is out of kilter.
Under the Perelandra co-creative gardening process, people garden to create the energy that helps generate their healing patterns. Therefore it is best if you can make your own flower essences from the plants in your garden. To know which plants are best to use, you can test kinesiolotically (muscle testing). Your body knows what it needs and you can ask simple yes/no questions and get the correct answer. What you are testing is the positive energy that is flowing through your body.
The easiest method for testing is to take your thumb and little finger and make a circle, ask your question and try to push your thumb and little finger apart, with the thumb and index finger of the other hand. If the answer is yes (positive energy) the circuit is strong, if the answer is negative, you weaken and no matter what you think, you can’t keep your fingers together. In my experience, practicing the kinesiology is easy, asking the correctly worded yes/no questions takes some practice. Sometimes I am so busy imagining the answer, I confuse the response and then have to start over again.
Many of you may have already experienced kinesiology, my youth group at church tried standing in a circle with one person in the center to demonstrate the power of positive thoughts. We were all told to either think a positive or a negative thought about this person. Then the person in the center held their arm straight out parallel to the ground, while one member of the group that had not been told if the thought was positive or negative was asked to try to push their arm toward the ground. If the thoughts were positive, the person could resist the force of the person pushing, but if the thoughts were negative, no matter the size or strength difference of the two people, the person was always able to push their arm toward the ground.
Once you have mastered kinesiology you can learn to test which flower essences you need. To make your own flower essence, you pick the chosen flower between 8am and 10:30 am, once they are fully open and dry. It is important to capture the flower at its most energetic, usually just on the day it is blooming. It is also important to focus on making only one essence at a time. Clean all utensils with hot soapy water before you start. Determine how many flower heads are needed to convert one quart of water to full essence solution – usually 1-5 flowers. Do not touch the flowers with your hands. Fill a large glass bowl with 1 quart of untreated or distilled water. Place the flowers with a tweezer on the water surface and place the uncovered bowl in a sunny spot in a garden where it won’t be disturbed. Ask the nature spirit for the flower to assist in the production of the flower essence. Stabilization will take 3 hours on a sunny day or 4 hours on a partly sunny day, avoid cloudy days if possible. Bring the glass bowl in from the garden, fill 2 quart jars with brandy to the 16 ounce level – so that you will have a 40% brandy (or substitute vinegar as the fixative) to 60% flower essence. Close the jar, label with the name and date and place in a dark cool location. That is it, it could not be easier to make!
It is recommended for regular use of the flower essences to transfer smaller quantities to a one or a one/half ounce bottle with a dropper. Flower essences do not have an expiration date, as long as they are not contaminated from touching anything else they will last forever. Unlike herbal tinctures, flower essences only require a drop or two, on the tongue, to be effective. Again the amount of the dose is checked using kinesiology. Ask the question “Do I need one drop?” (test) two drops (test) three drops (test) until the answer is no. Then you can ask “Do I need to take once per day?” (test) twice per day (test) or three times a day (test until the answer is no.
To give you an idea of the healing possible from various flower essences here is an extremely short list of what is available. Comfrey – healing, this plant repairs the higher vibration soul damage that may be the result of this or another lifetime. Salvia, emotional stability during times of extreme stress, useful in times of emergency. Sweet bell pepper (green) restores inner balance to the individual who lives and works in a stressful environment. Yellow yarrow, useful as protection on the emotional level during times of vulnerability caused by spiritual and psychological growth. In my own experience, after a brief period of regular usage I could distinguish the taste of each essence, although when I first began I only tasted the brandy. And while I was extremely skeptical of their effectiveness, over time I found that I was able to cope better with stressful situations and function on a higher spiritual level.
